Zaphod Beeblebrox

BY DIVINE RIGHT + SPOOKEY RUBEN + THE JOB

Thursday, Nov 19, 2009 8:00 PM EST (8:00 PM Doors)
at Zaphod Beeblebrox
in Ottawa, ON

By Divine Right was formed in 1989 by high school friends; guitarist and vocalist Jose Miguel Contreras, drummer Mark Goldstein, bassist Liz Teear and guitarist Steve Berman. They put out a number of independent releases before signing to Squirtgun Records for their 1997 album All Hail Discordia. This recording was then re-released by Squirtgun/Nettwerk. Bassist Brendan Canning and guitarist Leslie Feist joined the band for their 1999 release Bless This Mess. Canning and Feist later left the band, and have both been involved with Broken Social Scene.

By Divine Right's Mutant Message, the band's first album since 2004's Sweet Confusion, is scheduled to be released in Canada in 2009 on the Hand Drawn Dracula label. The album features José Contreras, Stew Heyduk and Darcy Rego with guest vocals from Jason Nunes and Lily Frost. The cover art was created by Jason Nunes.

Spookey, back at the helm of good ship Ruben, delights us once again with his knack for colouring outside current musical trends: anchored by a seven-chapter prog rock epic located smack dab in the middle of the album, Mechanical Royalty skips merrily through the garden of musical genres, playing tribute to everything from Yacht Rock to death metal. But this is not Joke Rock a la Ween. Spookey consistently dishes up his excitement for music in his own special heartfelt way.
