Trinidad-born trumpeter Etienne Charles headlines the evening with special guests Eddie Bullen Trio, La Petite Musical. Etienne will be performing tracks from his new album, Creole Soul which highlights a myriad of inspirations from Haitian creole chants and blues to bebop and R&B while drawing on an array of rhythms including Rocksteady, Reggae, Bel Air, Kongo and Calypso.
Etienne has been hailed by The New York Times as “an auteur” (Ben Ratliff), by Jazz Times as “A daring improviser who delivers with heart wrenching lyricism” (Bill Milkowski) and according to Downbeat Magazine “Charles delivers his ebullient improvisations with the elegance of a world-class ballet dancer.” (John Murph).
La Petite Musical is synonymous with the immortal Olive Walke and the legendary folk-choir that she founded in Port of Spain more than a half century ago. La Petite Musicale of Toronto was established by a core group of members from the parent company in Trinidad and Tobago. The repertoire includes traditional Spanish and French folk songs, gospel, classical renditions, calypso and parang.
From his first album, 'Nocturnal Affair' to his most recent Havana Nights',Eddie Bullen gives his audience a taste of contemporary jazz, flavoured with Caribbean and Latin rhythms.
