CMW presents Zaki Ibrahim and Shay Lia.
South African/Canadian Zaki Ibrahim is a globally distinguished singer, songwriter and producer known for making music that defies any one genre. The two-time Polaris Music Prize nominee (2013 Shortlist and 2018 Longlist), and Juno Award-nominated artist has come up as one of Canada’s hip hop and soul icons. Her works have lived comfortably in the art world, broken through as South African house music anthems, and have been featured in several film + TV placements (Suits, For Coloured Girls, Othello Burning) .
Montreal-based singer-songwriter Shay Lia is on the rise. Born in France, Shay moved to Djibouti at age four, where she closely identified with the Afar community, which remains an important part of her character today. Shay’s approach to songwriting is methodological – it all starts with a beat. If the music makes her dance, she’ll immediately start writing lyrics. The significance of dance in her practice extends beyond the act of physical movement. “Dancing is so personal to me,” she shares. “I feel most confident when I dance. I just shut down all my thoughts and express myself. It’s more of a feeling.”
