During the Edo period, legendary author Takizawa Bakin spends 28 years writing his masterpiece Nanso Hatomi Hakkenden, one of Japan’s greatest works. In it, a group of warriors, each carrying a magical prayer orb, embark on a harsh journey to fight the curse laid upon a powerful clan. He recounts his fantasy epic to his dear friend, the artist Hokusai but as the story finally approaches its climax, he begins to lose his sight. His devoted daughter must step in to help. The film blends an intimate story of an artist and his family with the spectacular tale of action and adventure he struggles to put on the page.

Hakkenden features delicate performances from a cast of some of Japan’s finest actors as well as dizzyingly huge special effects battles.

Starring:
Koji Yakusho, Seiyo Uchino, Tao Tsuchiya, Keisuke Watanabe, Shinobu Terajima
