The highest grossing live-action film in Japanese cinema history won 11 Japanese Academy Awards including Best Film, Director, Actor and Screenplay.

A sweeping historical drama from, based on Shuichi Yoshidas best-selling novel, follows Kikuo Tachibana. He is the son of a yakuza boss who, after his father is murdered, is taken as in an apprentice by celebrated kabuki actor Hanai Hanjiro. There he trains together with Hanjiro’s son Shunsuke and a close bond, as well as an intense rivalry, blossom between the two.

Kabuki is one of Japan’s most demanding artistic traditions and as Kikuo’s extraordinary talent propels him toward fame, the film becomes a rich portrait of ambition, sacrifice, and the cost of devoting one’s life to art. Kokuho builds to a stunning climax will shake the souls of all who watch.
