Canadian alt-pop duo Bestfriend is a culmination of two young artists, Stacy Kim (lead vocals/guitar) and Kaelan Geoffrey (synthesizers/vocals), making music from thousands of miles apart; Stacy in Vancouver, Kaelan in Toronto. Half-formed through a mutual friend and half-formed through Instagram DMs in 2018, Stacy would write songs, create rough demos, and send them to Kaelan, who would then produce it from there, passing it back and forth between each other to add/detract elements.
Through trial and error (and many gigabytes of .wav files sent back and forth), Bestfriend found their stride in dreamy, story-telling pop songs when they made their debut in 2019 with the dual-release singles, “Television ‘99” and “twentyfour.” After the release of a handful of singles, in 2021 Bestfriend released their debut EP places i’ve lived, a collection of songs that were dedicated to the people and places of the young adult lives they were growing out of. The EP was written and produced entirely by the duo, mixed by Grammy-nominated Travis Ference (Ariana Grande, Taylor Swift, Imagine Dragons) and mastered by Randy Merrill (Olivia Rodrigo, Harry Styles, Troye Sivan) and Derek Hoffman (Arkells, GRAE, Caveboy).
Bestfriend is now gearing up for places I’ve left EP, the follow-up sequel to places i’ve lived, which is set for a spring 2023 release. The forthcoming EP, produced and written entirely by the band, is their farewell to the retrospective, a culmination of all the experiences in their lives that have shaped them and led them to become the people they are today.
