laye is a unique new artist with a striking vocal style, prolific songwriting ability and a dark dreamy aesthetic that informs everything from her album art to her social media feeds. Born in Montreal, she always had a passion for art. In her teens, she wrote poetry and dabbled with singing and performance.
"I've always been a quiet person. Singing allowed me to not only discover who I am but also express it." says laye of her transition to becoming an artist. "As I became more comfortable performing I realized I preferred singing my own songs rather than the words of someone else. I was more drawn to expressing myself through my own words."
From writing poetry, laye turned to writing songs, and in 2016 began collaborating with others and posting them on social media.
As an artist, laye is never complacent, always inspired. While she's focused on establishing herself as a singer/songwriter, she considers her overall aesthetic to be equally important when it comes to her artistic identity. She is inspired by art -- from photography to painting, to interior design and architecture -- and just as she draws upon her life experiences for her song lyrics, she incorporates these artistic references into everything she does.
laye's desire for new experiences, learning and collaboration drew her to Toronto, Los Angeles, New York and beyond. She ravenously attended writing and recording sessions and kept adding songs to her works-in-progress. Between August 2017 and April 2018 laye wrote approximately 50 songs working with established producers including Lauren Christy (G-Eazy "Me Myself and I," Dua Lipa "Blow Your Mind"), FNZ (G-Eazy, A$AP Rocky, Denzel Curry, Fetty Wap), Ben Harrison & Ibrahim Asmar (Rihanna, Rita Ora, James Arthur, Blvk Jvck), Pomo (Anderson .Paak, Mac Miller).
Laye's collaboration with Kevvy Maher and Joel Stouffer produced her debut single "likefck" released Friday April 13th, 2018 to all DSP's.
"laye has one of those voices that only comes around once in a blue moon," notes co-writer Joel Stouffer. "On top of that, she's a super-talented songwriter. "likefck" was one of those songs where the stars aligned, the inspiration was flowing, and everyone in the room was on the same page. I'm super-proud that it's her first-ever release."
"My favourite element in an artist is mystique, and as I got to write more with laye I started to realize how layered a person and an artist she is" reveals Kevvy Maher. "She doesn't show every side of herself right away, because you have to earn it, and when you see it, it's hard not to fall in love with it. She's an old soul with a future quality. Young and dangerous."
Lyrically "likefck" is emotionally dynamic, with a slow build that is punctuated by both laye's heavenly refrain and the songs bombastic chorus, the lyrics thick with longing and loss.
For laye, emotions are at the heart of her creative inspiration: "I believe that the emotion behind a song is equally as important as the lyric. Often times I have connected songs to moments based on the feeling alone."
It's only been about three years since laye first started to experiment with making her own music, but she is already carving out a unique artistic path.
"With every new experience comes new inspiration," laye says of that exciting road ahead. "I'm always grateful to be put in new situations and have opportunities to grow because learning and evolving are important to me as an artist. The last year has been such a period of growth. I'm looking forward to sharing my creations with the world."
