Friday, December 5th at Lucky Bar Victoria BC Ska & Reggae Society is proud to present our last show of 2025 with longtime friends Mindil Beach who will return to perform in Victoria for the first time in over 10 years.

They'll be joined by their longtime friends Deep Sea Gypsies and Ska & Reggae Society alumni Blackwood Kings.

The saying "Better Late than Never" in Mindil Beach's situation would be better categorized as "never say never." That's because Mindil Beach (formerly Mindil Beach Markets) have been on quite a roller coaster ride during their run as an active band. With their late great beloved leader Daniel Kingbury the band toured throughout BC and other parts of Canada. They were actively promoting environmental stewardship in schools throughout BC with their Jellyfish Project and they headlined and played as support on big shows and festivals throughout Western Canada (including Victoria Ska & Reggae Festival). Now led by Roderick Campbell the band is finishing an album they started 10 years ago called "Vol III" and will finally perform the material they invested their energy into a decade ago.

For those of you that are new to Mindil Beach they have a west coast sound that mixes a bit of rock, folk, funk, hip hop and reggae.

Deep Sea Gypsies who will be playing just before Mindil Beach describe themselves as a combination of 60’s psych blues rock and 70’s southern rock mixed with elements of funk and soul. Their influences include the likes of Jimi Hendrix, Led Zeppelin, Muddy Waters and more.

And finally for the Island ska/reggae faithful we have Blackwood Kings. Blackwood Kings have been playing for almost a decade and a half in our scene. Their last appearance was at Victoria Ska & Reggae Festival opening for Jakobs Castle (ft. Jakob Nowell of Sublime), Long Beach Dub All Stars and Mad Professor. They will be coming to bring us their signature brand of ska and reggae straight-up.

Doors are 7pm/ Curfew is 11pm.

Advance tickets available on Ticketweb.ca and Hoyne Brewing Company. Get tickets as fast as you can because we're expecting this one to sell out.

    Blues-Rock

Born in a modern era with vintage dreams, the Deep Sea Gypsies offer a sound that is all their own. Playing a combination of 60’s psych blues rock and 70’s southern rock mixed with elements of funk and soul. With influences the likes of Jimi Hendrix, Led Zeppelin, Rory Gallagher, Muddy Waters, and Lynyrd Skynyrd, some might say they have souls much older than their age would suggest

    BLACKWOOD KINGS

    Reggae

Now six years into their lifespan, Blackwood Kings has proven to be one of the more unique bands to pop up in the Victoria BC scene. In spirit and ethos, they’re a punk band, but while contemporaries may lean towards buzz-saw-distorted guitars and shouted vocals, Blackwood Kings favour the reverb-laden upstrokes of ska and dub, producing a politically and emotionally charged brand of reggae fusion that is uniquely their own. And while the foundation of Blackwood Kings sound is comprised of the aforementioned Jamaican genres, no musical idea is off limits, with songs frequently travelling into disparate realms such as math rock, fusion, and jungle. Blackwood Kings released their second EP in the fourth quarter of 2015. While short in length, the four-track release showcases the diversity of the group's sound. Lead single "Into The Blue" (features frantic jungle drumming and skankin' guitars doused in reverb and delay. "Paralysis" takes the listener on a journey through angular stops and psychedelic bass-heavy dub, while "Idle Nature" sees the band explore their ska roots with bouncing upstrokes. "Upholding lies that blind us from the dirty minds that bind us/ Contending ideologies contain and then divide us" pines frontman Chris Zielonka on "Break Away", an earth-shaking dub track that morphs into a Latin-tinged sax-and-trombone conversation. Blackwood Kings' varied and malleable style has allowed them to share the stage with notable acts such as Authority Zero, J-Boog, The Slackers, The Mad Caddies, The Skints, Gondwana, and Third World. The group has appeared at festivals such as Rifflandia, Victoria Ska & Reggae Fest and Fernfest, while also lending their performances to social and political events such as the University of Victoria "Earth Fest" with speakers such as the Green Party's Elizabeth May, and a fundraiser for building a hospital in Sierra Leone alongside acclaimed reggae/highlife group Sierra Leone's Refugee All-Stars.
