Winterruption YEG takes place on Treaty 6 territory, the traditional territories of the nehiyaw, Dene, Stoney Nakoda, Nakota Sioux, and Annishnabe. We would also like to acknowledge this land is home to Metis and Inuit peoples. The volunteers, producers, patrons, and artists humbly admit that we are learning what it means to be on Treaty territory and unceded land. We recognize the land as an act of reconciliation and gratitude to those whose territory we reside on or are visiting. We know there is still important work that needs to be done to honor the treaties and. Indigenous histories, languages, and cultures influence our music community, and we are grateful to be guests on this land.
Winterruption YEG welcomes Montreal-based post-punk band Ribbon Skirt. Led by Anishinaabe musician Tashiina Buswa and guitarist Billy Riley, their sound is raw and enveloping, channeling angular guitars, driving rhythms, and lyrical threads that explore memory, love, grief, and Buswa’s relationship to her Indigenous heritage. Their debut album, Bite Down (Mint Records, April 2025), was met with critical acclaim and quickly established Ribbon Skirt as one of the most compelling new voices in indie music – earning Stereogum’s Album of the Week and a shortlist nomination for the 2025 Polaris Music Prize.
Catch them on Starlite Room's Temple Stage Friday Jan 23 along side Whitehorse's Cryptozoologists and locals Dual Nature.
