Description
Garden City Grooves is proud to welcome some of Canada’s finest, most powerful performers as we celebrate Black History Month with a jam-packed night of soul, hip-hop, afrobeat and funk. This very special night of music will be headlined by one of Canada’s hottest singers, the indelibly soulful TANIKA CHARLES. Tanika Charles' name has become synonymous with the finest grooves and rhythms in Canada. Her phenomenal album “Soul Run” was long-listed for the Polaris Music Prize in 2016 and was a 2017 Juno Award nominee for best R&B/Soul Recording of the Year. Since the release of her landmark album “Papillon de Nuit”, Charles has been on fire – touring relentlessly and spreading the word of deep, true soul music from one coast to the other. Her show-stopping performance at Victoria’s 23rd Annual Ska & Reggae Festival (2022) – where she opened for The Wailers – has been on the lips and minds of everyone who was there to witness it and we knew we had to bring her and her band back to the capital. This time she joins us in the warm, intimate confines of White Eagle Hall.
Joining the bill for this celebration of Black Canadian Music is Vancouver-based singer and rapper, MISSY D. Singing and rapping in both English and French, Missy D has established herself as an artist who can reach across aisles and bring people together through her art. Able to spit rapid-fire raps one moment and then seamlessly switching to her powerful singing voice, Missy D on stage must be seen to be believed. You can hear her influences readily – India.Arie, Missy Elliot, Erykah Badu to name a few – but Missy D’s thing is wholly unique and completely her own. Kicking off this special night of music is the genre-defying ALPHA CENTAURI. Blending funk, hip-hop, afrobeat, 90s R&B and a splash of 80s retro pop, the Zimbabwe-born west coast transplant is quickly heating up the west coast, playing a relentless schedule of shows up and down the Island and into the mainland. Garden City Grooves is also stoked to welcome our resident DJ for the night – DJ Rossco. He'll be spinning some of the finest grooves from across the spectrum of music, making sure we're bumping all night long.
Come out and get involved for one of the freshest nights of music Victoria is going to see this winter!

Formerly the best kept secret in soul music, Toronto-based Tanika Charles has become a known staple of
the genre both at home and abroad. Her music revels in honesty and attitude, her live show is high energy
and endearing, and she continues to win audiences over one stream, one Shazam and one encore at a time.
In 2016 Tanika independently released her debut album “Soul Run”, which would be re-released through
the Italian label Record Kicks in 2017. “Soul Run” was long-listed for the 2016 Polaris Music Prize and
nominated for the 2017 Juno Award for best R&B/Soul Recording of the Year.
Tanika’s 2019 sophomore album “The Gumption” picks up where “Soul Run” left off, continuing her
tradition of marrying classic soul with modern production and instrumentation. She was again long-listed
for the 2019 Polaris Music Prize and had the honour of being named the inaugural Polaris artist-in-
residence for 2020 at the Studio Bell National Music Centre. In early 2020 “The Gumption” was
nominated for the Juno Awards 2020 R&B/Soul Recording of the Year. April 2022 has brought the release
of her critically acclaimed new record “Papillon de Nuit: The Night Butterfly.” The album continues
Tanika's incredible streak of albums, further cementing her place in the pantheon of Canadian soul music.
Backed by her band The Wonderfuls, Tanika has embarked on five international tours since releasing Soul
Run, performing in front of many thousands of fans across nine countries. Tanika’s live show oscillates
between faithful recreations of her studio recordings and revealing influences of rock, gospel and country
influences.

ALPHA CENTAURI is an intriguing new singer and MC that blends genres (funk, hip hop, afrobeat, 90’s r&b, 80’s retro pop) into a swirl of conscious lyrics and catchy sing-out-loud choruses.
ALPHA CENTAURI (real name Sean Chigumba) is originally from Zimbabwe. and was educated (and later worked) as a lawyer. However, soon after passing the bar and becoming licensed in his homeland, he realized that the legal life was not the right fit for him. He changed gears. He instead got on a plane for Canada with the plan of giving his music career a serious shot.
He made quick use of his new location by releasing a single (with fellow ex-pat Zimbabwean Swisher) about his experience leaving home (“Away” in 2016) which was produced by himself on a 12 year old laptop on his apartment’s kitchen table. “Away” was recently placed as the theme to a feature film, EVELYNE, which is now being streamed on the Roku channel worldwide..
ALPHA then set his sights on getting in front of local live audiences - performing shows with local hip hop artists such as Moka Only, Illvis Freshly, Mo Moshiri (of Sweatshop Union) and Sirreal to refine his craft. During this time, ALPHA began a surge of songwriting - which then continued into the COVID lockdowns of early 2020.
ALPHA then caught the ear of record producer / music industry veteran Wes Smith and acclaimed mixing engineer Justin Hicks. Eight songs were recorded with a full band between January 2022 and October of 2022 - with the first single resulting from these sessions, the afro-beat flavoured “I’ll Fly” , released in January 2023 internationally on all streaming platforms.
