Description
Garden City Grooves VIII kicks off with the return of one of the most legendarily groovy bands to come out of the west coast – THE BOOM BOOMS. The Boom Booms went on a long hiatus shortly after their last Victoria appearance at Victoria Ska & Reggae Fest XVIII in 2017. After a one off performance a short while ago, the band quickly rediscovered the shared love of performing that made them such a force to begin with. Come experience the pure, unadulterated musical joy of a Boom Booms show as they lay down their tender, groovy, lyrical-melodic music. As the band bounces between funk, soul, reggae, Latin and African influences, their audiences never know where they’re going to be led – but no matter where it is, there’s going to be more reason to DANCE.
Joining the Boom Booms will be Victoria's own The Bankes Brothers who play a mixture of originals and soul classics including hits by Otis Redding and Sam Cooke,
We are also excited to have Xhalida hailing from the unceded territories of the Musqueam, Tseil-Waututh and Squamish (Vancouver, British Columbia), Xhalida September is a uniquely talented singer, songwriter, entertainer and activist. As a
songwriter, Xhalida's hobby of writing poetry has been a gateway to experimenting with various styles;and in her social activism she draws from her experiences to grow as a conscious entertainer; inspiring her to write music to soothe and inspire her community.
Victoria's own DJ Coldbeef will be spinning funk, soul, hip hop and anything else that counts as groovy between sets.

There tends to be plenty of teeth at a Boom Boom show. Smiles abound as the crowd is put at ease by the 5-piece band of lifelong friends who emanate a playful bravado and camaraderie as they deliver their songs which draw on funk, soul, reggae, latin, folk, and african influences. The shows are sweaty, joyful affairs interspersed with tender lyrical-melodic moments of great sincerity. During their dozen years they have released 4 albums, hosted block parties for charity, hosted the “East Van Summer Jam”, played countless music festivals, busked around Europe, toured Latin America, made a documentary in Brazil, and remained a mainstay in the BC music scene. Far from getting crusty, The Boom Booms are well in stride and promise new music in the near future.
