Description
In honour of Black History Month and to celebrate the final presentation of Garden City Grooves, Victoria BC Ska & Reggae Society is extremely proud to welcome New Orleans brass champions, THE SOUL REBELS to Victoria for the first time. It’s been five years since The Soul Rebels have been to western Canada and we say that’s far too long! One of the most powerful brass bands to come out of the US in as long as we can remember, The Soul Rebels are a gold standard for live music in North America and beyond. The band bridges the gaps between classic brass band sounds, funk, soul and hip-hop. Through their collaborations with some of the biggest names in not just hip-hop, but music as a whole – like Lil Wayne, Wu-Tang Clan, Katy Perry, DMX, Nas, Portugal. The Man and Macy Gray, to name a few – the band has garnered attention and praise globally. No other band in music is doing it like The Soul Rebels. To listen to an album from The Soul Rebels or, more importantly, to catch the group live, is to be presented with a sound that reminds you of the past while pulling you forward into the future – all while making you groove and sweat on the dancefloor.
Joining The Soul Rebels for this very special closing night of Garden City Grooves VIII is veteran of the Seattle hip-hop scene, community organizer and KEXP host GABRIEL TEODROS. It’s been a long while since Teodros has been above the 49th parallel to lay down his deep, ultra-smooth conscious hip-hop and we’re very excited to see what our old friend has in store for his triumphant return to Victoria. We’re also excited to have DJ ABEL, one of Vancouver’s premier selectors, on hand to hold things down with his hard-hitting dancehall and hip-hop sounds. Come join us as we wrap up Garden City Grooves VIII in serious style.

Gabriel Teodros is a musician and writer from South Seattle who first made a mark with the group Abyssinian Creole, and reached an international audience with his critically-acclaimed solo debut Lovework. He has been setting stages on fire ever since, all across the US, Canada, Mexico, Cuba, Ethiopia and South Africa; often in combination with workshops on creative writing, music, history, science fiction and media literacy.
His latest solo offering What We Leave Behind was released in the early months of the pandemic, on the 20 year anniversary of Teodros' first solo performance. The album is a collection of some of the brightest gems from his unreleased archives, with a few new songs reflecting the times we are in now: from the Movement for Black Lives to grieving everyone we lost in the pandemic.
What We Leave Behind was preceded by 2018’s History Rhymes If It Doesn't Repeat (A Southend Healing Ritual), a collective exercise in moving through trauma that made NPR say "Gabriel Teodros is one of the bravest rappers currently working in Seattle", and 2014’s Evidence Of Things Not Seen, a James Baldwin-inspired collaboration with Aotearoa-based producer SoulChef that was described by critics as Teodros’ strongest album yet, after a decade of notable releases that also include Colored People's Time Machine, Children Of The Dragon, and CopperWire's Earthbound.
In 2015, Teodros made his speculative fiction debut with a story published in Octavia's Brood: Science Fiction Stories from Social Justice Movements, and in 2016 he graduated from the Clarion West Writers Workshop for Speculative Fiction. His writing has also been published by The Feminist Wire and Okayafrica.
Teodros currently hosts EARLY every weekday from 5-7am (pacific time) on KEXP 90.3 FM in Seattle, streaming worldwide on www.kexp.org and via the KEXP mobile apps.
