Description
Victoria Ska & Reggae Society is proud to present a triple punk bill from East to West featuring some of the best of both that Canada has to offer.
First we are excited to present the Island debut of Bad Waitress who are on Stomp Records.
In their own words, "Bad Waitress is what happens when you spill your drink, flip the table, and still leave a tip. Emerging from Toronto’s vibrant underground, the four-piece punk band — Kali-Ann Butala (her/she) Katelyn Molgard (they/them) , Moon (they/he), and Nicole Cain (her/she) — has redefined modern garage punk with a sound that’s ferocious, clever, and unapologetically alive."
"Renowned for their explosive live shows, Bad Waitress channels the confrontational spirit of acts like The Stooges, Fugazi, and Yeah Yeah Yeahs while remaining unmistakably their own. Their latest single, “Loving Kind” is the first song off their upcoming album “In the Hollow”.
Their new album slated for release a couple of weeks before this show!
Then Mean Bikini are back after opening for Lagwagon at Victoria's 27th Annual Ska & Reggae Festival this past summer. They have been touring the country non-stop and will be playing other Canadian dates with Bad Waitress on their tour. For those of you that don't know Mean Bikini they describe themselves as 'pointed, unapologetic, viciously fun, and punishingly aggressive' Imagine hardcore and skate punk with a twist of queer rage and just the right amount of catchiness mixed with a highly energetic performance. This gives you an accurate picture of Mean Bikini.
Finally we are excited to have HOG on our show for the first time. HOG'S punk styles are heavily inspired by bands such as NoMeansNo, Pigment Vehicle, Big Black, Death From Above 1979 Tool, and maybe even a little Elton John. The band was formed in Toronto in 2016 and then replanted into Victoria where the founding member - bassist Evan Hillier is from.

Blasting out of the seemingly sleepy town of Cumberland, BC, Mean Bikini are hailed for their fast, and enthusiastic live show. With musical influences that range from skate punk to hardcore they make a point to celebrate the good in the world while tearing down the bad in a way that is pointed and unapologetic, but also inclusive and just plain fun. Mostly queer, sometimes political, always a damn good time, when Mean Bikini is stalking the stage, you know you're gonna get kicked in the ears – in the nicest way possible.

The brainchild of bassist Evan Hillier [ex 222], HOG materialized under the bleak skylines of Toronto circa 2016 as a drum and bass duo. Inspired heavily by bands such as NoMeansNo, Pigment Vehicle, Big Black, Death From Above 1979 Tool, and maybe even a little Elton John - Evan wrote and recorded a handful of songs with the mighty and powerful Cole Howson. Though a mere fragment of what they were to become, the early 'Toronto HOG' demos can still be found to this day on the interweb.
Upon leaving the Big Smoke and returning to his hometown of Victoria BC, in 2019, Hillier sought out another Drummer to shred tasty licks alongside - enter Caleb Belknap [Decryptor, ex Happy Ending]. HOG began anew. Practicing at Belknap's studio on a rural farm, they honed their songs of yesteryear and sharpened their proverbial 'chops'. After the social depression that befell the world ended, HOG was keen to unleash their songs on the mean streets of Vancouver Island but then they thought, "man we need someone who can sing - like really good - and maybe play guitar too". The idea of a power trio intrigued them and so they reached out to old high-school chum and fellow shredder Liam McLaren [ex - Zoo Riots, The Archers]. McLaren brought a certain "je ne sais quoi" that turned HOG from just another crusty punk band into something sharper, handsomer and probably easier to listen to.
After terrorizing their local music scene, HOG set to work recording their first album with good friend and award winning producer Liam Moes. Critics and people who have heard them describe the songs as "really friggin' sick"!
