Doom Metal
Conan
Conan
Doom Metal
Conan’s doom is singular. Carved of granite. Yes, of course there’ve been changes since guitarist/vocalist Jon Davis founded the group in 2006, but the intention at the time toward superlative heavy – tonal extremity wrought with impressionist lyrics stripping ideas to the core where sometimes the whole line is just one word; they’ve always called it “Caveman Battle Doom” – remains at the root of everything they’ve done since. And across five studio records in the decade from 2012-2022, Conan have set the standard by which much of “heavy” anything is judged. And in comparison, most is found wanting.
But for every time you’ve heard about Conan’s music being like galloping steeds or frost-covered sharp-peaked mountains, etc., imagery of largesse and violence, the truth is Conan are an exercise in frequency. It’s the low resonance that shakes your chest, the depth of the bass – now handled by David Ryley (ex-Fudge Tunnel) – the push of air from Johnny King’s kick drum, or the way the dark-fuzz distortion of Davis’ guitar is offset by shouting vocals cutting through that sometimes punishing onslaught, rarely to offer comfort so much as add viciousness to the crash, plod and pillage.
In 2024, Conan sign to Heavy Psych Sounds as a recognized name and one of the foremost acts of their generation, wildly influential in their home country of the UK and well beyond; headliners in practice and theory alike. Their fifth LP, 2022’s ‘Evidence of Immortality,’ brought a dark ambience to coincide with its outright attack. With experiments in darkwave and synth adding breadth to the stated root purpose of aural force, it’s never been harder to guess where the next few years might take their sound, but whatever’s coming, Conan will make it kill. The better part of two decades later, their reliability remains unshakable. Which you want when your band is so heavy that the floor and your ribcage both start to vibrate. – JJ Koczan / June 2024

Radioactivity
Radioactivity
Punk
Dealing in fast, streamlined punk rock with ringing guitars, simple but effective melodic hooks, and a double dose of energy, Radioactivity were formed in 2013 by Jeff Burke and Mark Ryan, who had previously worked together in the well-respected garage punk band the Marked Men. Radioactivity began as a spinoff of the Novice, a band Burke worked with from 2010 to 2012 while he was living in Japan. When Burke returned to the United States and settled in Denton, Texas, he didn't want to let the songs he wrote for the Novice go to waste, so he reworked them and assembled a new band as a platform for the material. With Burke on guitar and vocals, Ryan on bass and vocals, Daniel Fried on guitar, and Gregory Rutherford on drums, Burke named the new band Radioactivity, and they cut a self-titled debut for Dirtnap Records that was released in October 2013. The group supported the album with live work, though they emphasized that they wanted to be known as a good band rather than a good local band, and aimed for quality over quantity when booking shows. Radioactivity's second album, Silent Kill, was released by Dirtnap on June 30, 2015. Bassist Orville Neeley replaced Ryan in 2016.

Hardcore Punk
Total Chaos
Total Chaos
Hardcore Punk
Thirty years ago in Pomona Valley, California, was the birth of Total Chaos. Created out of the desperate need to save a dying genre of punk rock, during a time that the market was saturated with a more commercial new style. It was more important than ever to express their social and political views. The idea of social responsibility was a significant thing, from organizing peace punk picnics, to protesting against the gulf war, their music had a meaning and stood for something. Over the years, the band has seen many things come and go, but they have stuck to their original ideals. Whether you are pop punk, street punk, hardcore punk, straight edge, political punk, goth punk, skate punk, crust punk, metal punk, or whatever box they try to put you in, Total Chaos unites you all into one scene: PUNK ROCK!

Kacy & Clayton
Folk
Kacy & Clayton are a Canadian psych/folk duo. New album The Siren's Song releases in the UK via New West on 27 April. Produced by Wilco’s Jeff Tweedy and recorded by Tom Schick at Wilco’s The Loft in Chicago. The Siren’s Song, is the follow up to their acclaimed 2015 New West Records debut Strange Country, and for the first time incorporates full, electric band arrangements. Combining the startlingly expressive voice and violin of Kacy Anderson with the intricate guitar work and warm harmony vocals of her cousin and musical partner Clayton Linthicum, their sound is an arresting amalgamation of psychedelic folk, English folk revival and the ancestral music of Southern Appalachia.
